West Florida Electric Cooperative, Inc. (WFEC) held its Annual Christmas Banquet & Awards Ceremony on Thursday, December 10, 2009.

Bruce Sorey, a utility worker in the Graceville district office took home the top honor as 2009 Employee of the Year. Sorey was chosen to receive this award by his peers at WFEC because they felt he best exemplified the following traits: personality, punctuality, safety habits, team work, flexibility, and performance on the job.

He began working at WFEC in 2005 after serving in the Army & Army Reserve for 28 years, including a one year deployment to Iraq where he served as a maintenance supervisor. Sorey was born and raised in Campbellton, Florida and attended Graceville High School. He and his wife of 16 years, Duanne have three children: Crystal, 29, a nurse; Delicia, 16, a cheerleader and sophomore at Graceville High School; and Lamar, 14, a basketball player at Graceville High. In his spare time, Sorey enjoys fishing, gardening and watching Florida State football.

“I enjoy working with my co-workers because when you combine all the different personalities, you get the best out of everyone. We’re all just one big happy family,” said Sorey. “I was in shock and honored that they had chosen me as Employee of the Year. While they were reading the description of the winner, all I kept thinking was ‘I wonder who they are talking about?’” he continued.

Jamie Murray, a WFEC contract employee was also recognized with an Outstanding Service award. Many other employees were recognized for their years of service to the cooperative and perfect attendance.
