Check Insurance Coverage Before Hurricanes Threaten Now is the time to check your homeowner's insurance policy to make sure it contains adequate coverage, and to learn how to report damage. Don't wait until a hurricane appears on the radar; most insurance companies will not accept new applications after a designated hurricane enters the Gulf of Mexico. Remember that all of Florida is susceptible to damage from a hurricane, not just coastal counties. Damage can be caused anywhere in the state by flooding, strong winds or tornadoes as a hurricane sweeps inland. Before the storm:
