Apprentices Complete Program Milestone

Back to Light Flashes

West Florida Electric Cooperative apprentice linemen, Karl McClamma and Josh Carr have completed all of the bookwork required for their apprenticeship
program, a crucial part of their training. 107313001

The apprenticeship program is designed to combine classroom instruction with hands-on experience. While completing the academic portion is a major achievement, it represents one part of the broader training required. Apprentice linemen must also complete thousands of hours of on-the-job training under the supervision of experienced journeymen. This real-world experience allows apprentices to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom while developing the technical skills and safety practices necessary for working in the field.

Typically, apprenticeship programs require 8,000 hours of on-the-job training, which generally takes about four years to complete. During this time,  apprentices gain valuable experience in a wide range of tasks, including constructing and maintaining power lines, troubleshooting outages, and working safely.
