Are You Ready for Thunderstorm Season?

‹ Back to Light Flashes

Storm season surrounds our homes with thunder and lightning, putting your valuable electronics and appliances at risk. With our meter-base surge protection, you can enjoy comfort, convenience and peace of mind knowing that you have “utility grade” protection from nearby lightning strikes.

We also recommend that your sensitive electronics have additional plug-in surge protection. These devices also protect from surges on cable, telephone, fax, internet and satellite connections to your electronics.

West Florida Electric Cooperative’s surge protection program offers superior protection by combining two levels of advanced surge-stopping technology.

First, the meter-base protector diverts large surges before they enter your home. Next, optional plug-in devices protect individual electronics for an important second line of defense.

Here’s how it works: the meter-base protector will be installed behind your meter to divert the largest surges away from your home, while the plug-in protectors will be plugged into individual outlets to protect any connected device.

What it protects: the meter-base protector is for large appliances like your refrigerator or freezer, while the plug-in protectors work best for electronics like TVs and computers.

What it costs: a meter-base surge protector can be leased for $4.25/month with a one-time $10 installation fee. The light on the unit will go out if it has taken a hit and needs to be replaced. We will replace it as many times as necessary during the life of the lease. If any damage is incurred, we will do all the necessary paperwork for your claim. This unit is designed to protect electro-mechanical devices with motors and compressors that are typically in large appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, heating and cooling systems, etc. It is not designed to protect sensitive electronics equipment such as microwaves, TV’s, DVD players, etc. or any appliance with a microprocessor. WFEC is offering free installation now through July 31.

The meter-base surge protector can be purchased for $124.95 + tax with an installation fee of $10. This unit will only be replaced once without charge to the customer if purchased rather than leased.

The in-home plug-strip sells for $89.95 + tax. The plug-in unit is secondary protection designed specifically for your sensitive electronics equipment such as those mentioned above. The in-home plug-strip along with the meter-base unit will give you the protection you need for the majority of your home’s appliances and electronics. For more information about surge protection, please contact one of our district offices by calling 800-342-7400.
